- Gift card / Bitcoin / Zelle to a stranger who "is the government" = scam. No exceptions the FTC publishes.
- Caller ID can lie. A badge photo in a text is not a badge.
- Type the agency: ftc.gov · ssa.gov · irs.gov · medicare.gov
- Report: ReportFraud.ftc.gov · SSA OIG · tigta.gov (IRS) · 1-800-MEDICARE
What Broke, in Plain Language
Nobody has to hack the FTC. They register lookalike domains, run ads, and spoof caller ID so the phone says Federal Trade Commission. The October 29 agency note: impersonation is the top reported fraud category, billions in losses. Since the Impersonation Rule took effect in 2024: 14 completed enforcement actions, more than $80 million in redress. After letters to registrars, 19 impersonation websites came down. That list is public. None of it is how you reach the real FTC.
Consumer advice is blunter than a CVE. Government agencies will not call, email, text, or DM you on social media to ask for money or personal information. Only a scammer will. A site that is not .gov is not the FTC even if it paints the seal. We are not going to pretend this page claws back a gift-card PIN you already read aloud. Speed still matters for card charges and some wires. Honesty first: hang-up guide, not a refund machine.
Who This Actually Hits
| What showed up | This guide? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Call/text/email/DM: FTC, SSA, IRS, Medicare, "national consumer protection," sheriff, immigration - pay now or else | Yes | Government imposter family |
| Website that is not ftc.gov / consumer.ftc.gov / reportfraud.ftc.gov | Yes | The 19 takedowns were this class |
| Paper IRS/SSA letter; you will call a number from the .gov site you typed | Maybe real | IRS usually starts by mail. Never the number in a threatening SMS |
| You filed at the FTC and later got recovery mail at the address you gave | Can be real | They still will not demand a wire to "release" it |
| Browser popup: FBI/FTC lock screen | Yes as a popup | Close the browser. Not the government |
The Two-Minute Check
- Read the ask. Money, SSN, Medicare number, bank login, gift card, crypto, "move cash to a safe account," arrest, deportation, prize, refund department wants routing numbers. Hang up or delete.
- Leave their channel. No SMS link. No number they recited. No QR. Type ftc.gov, ssa.gov, irs.gov, or medicare.gov. Confirm .gov and HTTPS.
- Real FTC money out. Refunds from FTC cases: check, prepaid debit, or PayPal, with a case name you can match at ftc.gov/refunds - typed. No fee to release a refund.
- Report even if you paid $0. ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Agency extras in the table below.
| Agency they named | Real agency will not... | You type / call (you looked it up) |
|---|---|---|
| FTC | Demand money, threaten arrest, promise a prize, tell you to transfer cash "to protect it" | ftc.gov · ReportFraud.ftc.gov · ftc.gov/refunds |
| Social Security | Threaten to suspend your SSN; demand pay by phone/text/DM | ssa.gov · local office via SSA's locator · report to SSA OIG (oig.ssa.gov) |
| IRS | Start a tax debt with a threat-call and Bitcoin. Private collectors call only after two letters, never ask you to pay on that call, never arrest you | irs.gov · 800-829-1040 · tigta.gov |
| Medicare | Sell you a card or ask for your number on a surprise call. Cards are mailed free | medicare.gov · 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) |
Do not open these. FTC listed them among the 19 taken down: fttc.us, FTB-gov.us, helpteam.mystrikingly.com, FTC-Support.org, ftcfederal.org, federaltradecommunications.com, FTC-Complaints.org, FTC-help.com, info-federaltrade.com, federaltradecommission.gold, Eftc.online, Frrs.click, federaltradecommission.co, federaltradecommissionapp.com, federaltradecommissionconsulting.com, reportfraudftcgov.netlify.app, ftcinfousa.org, federaltradecommission.net, and an FTC-v-Credit-Glory pages.dev host. New fakes will appear. The test is always .gov you typed.
If You Already Paid or Gave a Code
- Bank or card: number on the plastic, not Google's first ad. "Unauthorized / scam." Gift-card brands (Apple, Amazon, Google Play): say the PIN was read in a scam. Untouched balance can sometimes freeze. Read-aloud PINs are often gone - still call.
- ReportFraud.ftc.gov the same day. SSN or bank login: IdentityTheft.gov. Free freeze: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion (USA.gov documents the freeze).
- Email and bank passwords from a device you trust. Mailbox involved: 15-minute mailbox audit.
- Tell the relative. House rule: no money on a surprise call, even if the voice sounds right.
Takeaways
- Hang up. Type .gov. ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Gift cards and crypto are not how the U.S. government collects.
- 19 fake FTC sites died. The habit outlasts the list.
- Caller ID is not a badge. This page does not get Bitcoin back.
FAQ
They had my name and last four. Brokers leak. Knowledge is not employment at the FTC.
Robocall: press 1 to speak to an agent. FTC: do not press numbers; it can mean more calls. Hang up.
Sheriff / missed jury duty / ICE, pay now or jail. Same family. Look up the real office on usa.gov or the county site you type. Do not pay a caller.
FTC protection app / "remove me from the list" fee. No official app that charges you to stop scams. Delete it.
Is this the same as a fake store on Black Friday? Different script. Same payment rule: nobody legitimate demands gift cards. Shopping-deal checks are a later article if we write one - not this URL.
